Enclosure, Belgarrow, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Belgarrow in County Mayo, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but largely unexplained in any publicly available form.

Enclosures of this kind, a broad category in Irish archaeology, typically refer to areas of ground defined by a bank, ditch, wall, or some combination of these, and they can date from almost any period, prehistoric through early medieval. Without knowing which type this is, the imagination is left to do some of the work, and that is not always a bad thing.

Belgarrow is a small townland in the west of Mayo, a county that contains an unusually dense concentration of archaeological monuments, partly because the bogland and thin soils that discouraged intensive later farming have left earlier features relatively undisturbed. Enclosures in such settings can represent anything from a ringfort, the circular earthwork farmstead common across Ireland between roughly the sixth and twelfth centuries, to a much older field boundary or ceremonial site. The specific character of the Belgarrow enclosure, its dimensions, construction, date, and condition, remains formally undocumented in any accessible public record at this time.

What can be said with confidence is that it exists as a protected monument, which means it has been identified and deemed significant enough to preserve. For now, Belgarrow holds its particular shape in the ground quietly, one of thousands of Irish sites whose stories are still waiting to be fully told.
