Enclosure, Blackcastle, Co. Kildare

At Blackcastle in County Kildare, an ancient enclosure complex lies entirely invisible at ground level. There is no earthwork to stumble across, no raised bank or sunken ditch that a walker might notice underfoot. The site exists, in any practical sense, only from the air, betrayed by the subtle discolouration of crops growing over buried features below the soil.

The enclosure was identified by archaeologist Dr. Gillian Barrett during aerial photographic surveys carried out on 26 July 1990 and 15 July 1991. The photographs she captured revealed a cropmark, the phenomenon by which buried ditches and banks influence how crops ripen above them, producing pale or dark tonal differences visible from altitude that correspond to underlying archaeological features. What emerged from those images was a complex, layered arrangement: an incomplete curvilinear enclosure defined by a fosse, which is an external ditch, with a rectangular enclosure attached to its north side and a rectilinear enclosure appended to the south. The combination of curved and angular forms suggests either different phases of use or a deliberate functional arrangement, though without excavation it is impossible to say which. The site forms part of a broader programme of aerial archaeological survey that Dr. Barrett conducted across Kildare between 1989 and 2000, work that brought a substantial number of previously unrecorded monuments to light across the county's agricultural lowlands.

Because this site survives only as a cropmark, there is nothing for a visitor to see from the ground. Its significance lies in what it represents about the landscape rather than anything visible in it, a reminder that Co. Kildare's flat, farmed terrain conceals a great deal more archaeology than its surface suggests.
