Enclosure, Cahergal, Co. Galway

Something about this small patch of ground in County Galway resists easy categorisation.

A shallow scarp, no more than half a metre at its highest, traces an irregular loop across a gentle rise in undulating grassland, enclosing an area roughly thirty metres north to south and twenty-seven metres east to west. That modest earthwork is essentially all that remains, and even its shape has proved elusive over time. Early cartographers could not quite agree on what they were looking at.

The confusion is recorded in the maps themselves. On the Ordnance Survey Fair Plan, an early working document produced during the great nineteenth-century survey of Ireland, the feature was marked as a circular area defined by a broken line, suggesting uncertainty in the field. By the time the first edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map was published, the same feature had been rendered as a roughly triangular area with a solid boundary line, implying something more definite. Whether the ground changed, the surveyor changed, or simply the interpretation changed is impossible to say now. What survives today is described as a subcircular enclosure, poorly preserved, sitting quietly in the grass. Associated with it is a recorded cillín burial ground, a term referring to a small, informal burial site, typically used historically for unbaptised infants or others excluded from consecrated ground. These sites are found across Ireland, often attached to or near older enclosures, and carry a particular kind of quiet weight in the landscape.
