Enclosure, Cahermackirilla, Co. Clare

At the western edge of a plateau in County Clare, a rough spread of stones in the pasture grass is all that remains of what was once a subcircular enclosure, roughly 25 metres across.

It is the kind of site that rewards patience and a certain willingness to read a landscape rather than simply look at it. Later drystone field walls have been built both across and inside its perimeter, so the original shape is fragmentary at best, surviving most clearly on the western side where the stonework still reaches a modest height of around a metre.

The enclosure sits within a large multiperiod field system, meaning the surrounding landscape was worked and reworked across several different eras, each generation leaving its own layer of walls, boundaries, and structures. The site was recorded on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps in both 1842 and 1920, marked with hachures, the small radiating lines cartographers used to indicate earthworks and enclosures, which suggests it was still legible as an ancient feature even then. Today it is considerably more worn. The outer wall-face can only be traced with any confidence along a short arc between roughly east-northeast and east-southeast; elsewhere it fades into the ground entirely. Close by, about 55 metres to the northeast, there is a ruined house, and a hut site lies some 70 metres further in the same general direction, suggesting this corner of the plateau was occupied, at various points, by people going about quite ordinary lives.

The enclosure is set on a gentle south-facing slope in rough pasture, which means the ground is uneven and the stonework blends easily into the surrounding terrain. The western arc, where the spread is widest and highest, is the clearest place to begin making sense of the plan.
