Enclosure, Cappaghkennedy, Co. Clare

On the high rocky grazing land of Cappaghkennedy in County Clare, a modest ring of loosely stacked stone sits within a wide field system, attracting barely a second glance from anyone passing through.

What makes it quietly interesting is not what it turned out to be, but how long it took to find out. For years it was formally catalogued as a protected archaeological monument, listed as an enclosure in both the Sites and Monuments Record of 1992 and the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, carrying the implicit suggestion of ancient origins.

The site appeared on aerial photography, and that overhead view, which can make field boundaries and earthworks leap into legibility, was enough to place it on the official map. It was only when someone actually walked out to inspect it, in 1999, that a more prosaic reality emerged. The structure is subcircular, roughly fifteen metres in diameter, and built from a low wall of loose stone. The assessment concluded it was of apparently modern construction. In other words, a relatively recent farm enclosure, the kind of small stone-walled pen or fold that was a practical fixture of upland agricultural life across the west of Ireland, had spent the best part of a decade filed alongside genuine early medieval ringforts and prehistoric enclosures. The confusion is understandable; from above, a well-made dry-stone fold and an ancient enclosure can look remarkably similar.

The place sits within a broader field system on what is described as flat, high, rocky ground, a landscape type common to the Burren's fringes and the rougher upland grazing country of Clare more generally. There is nothing at Cappaghkennedy to suggest any early settlement function here. What remains is instead a small case study in the limits of remote survey and the difference between a mark on a map and a thing on the ground.
