In a gently sloping pasture field near Carragh in County Kildare, something circular lies buried beneath the grass, invisible to anyone standing in the field itself. The only evidence that it exists at all is a cropmark, the faint signature of a buried structure revealed when it was photographed from the air. Cropmarks form when buried features, whether filled ditches, collapsed walls, or compacted floors, affect the soil's moisture and nutrients in ways that cause the grass or crops above them to grow slightly differently from the surrounding ground. From altitude, and under the right conditions of dry weather and low sun, those differences become legible as rings, lines, or shapes pressed into the landscape like a watermark on old paper.

The aerial photograph in question, catalogued as GSI N 388-7, shows the cropmark of what appears to be a circular enclosure on this east-facing slope. Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in the Irish landscape. They range from prehistoric ring ditches and Bronze Age burial monuments to the ringforts, known in Irish as ráth or lios, that were built in their thousands during the early medieval period as enclosed farmsteads. Without excavation, it is not possible to say which category this particular feature belongs to, or what period it dates from. The pasture above it shows no trace of any mound, ditch, or bank that might offer a clue on the ground.
