Enclosure, Carrigagown, Co. Tipperary

There is a particular kind of historical listing that stops you short, not because of what it describes but because of what it cannot.

At Carrigagown in County Tipperary, a site classified as an enclosure occupies a south-west-facing slope on gently rolling ground. An enclosure, in the archaeological sense, is typically a defined area bounded by a bank, ditch, or wall, the sort of feature that might once have surrounded a farmstead, a ceremonial space, or a place of settlement. What survives at Carrigagown is a hollow depression in a field of tillage, and the working assumption is that it results from quarrying rather than anything that might be called ancient activity. No archaeological features are visible.

The site was recorded in the Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary, compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien and published in 2002, a systematic effort to catalogue the known and suspected heritage of the county. The classification as an enclosure presumably reflects something seen in earlier survey work, an earthwork, a crop mark, a trace in the landscape that has since been absorbed or obscured by agricultural use. Tillage fields are particularly hard on such features; repeated ploughing gradually levels subtle earthworks that might survive for centuries under pasture. Whatever prompted the original designation, the ground itself no longer offers much to read.
