Enclosure, Carrowbeg, Co. Mayo

On the north-western edge of Swinford in County Mayo, somewhere beneath modern housing and tarmac, there is a monument that exists now only on paper.

A circular embanked enclosure, somewhere between fifteen and twenty metres in diameter, was recorded on the 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, situated roughly twenty-five metres south of a small stream. By the time later map editions were produced, it had already vanished from the cartographic record entirely, and today there is no visible trace at ground level. The place is, in the most literal sense, nowhere to be seen.

The 1838 OS six-inch mapping was among the most detailed surveying Ireland had seen, and features recorded on it, field boundaries, earthworks, enclosures, were often already ancient by the time the surveyors arrived. A circular embanked enclosure of this kind would typically have originated as a ringfort or a similarly enclosed settlement, structures that were built and used across Ireland from roughly the early medieval period onwards. Whether this one was agricultural, residential, or ceremonial in function is impossible to say without excavation. What the map does confirm is that something was physically present and distinct enough to be noted by trained surveyors in the eighteen-thirties, and that within decades it had either been levelled or had eroded to the point of invisibility. The development of Swinford's outskirts over the intervening years accounts for why no earthwork survives today.
