Enclosure, Carrowclogh, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly sobering about a monument that survives only as a notation on a map.

At Carrowclogh in County Limerick, a small enclosure once sat on a gentle east-facing slope in what is now open pasture. By the time anyone thought to formally inspect it, nothing remained. The ground had been levelled, and the enclosure had passed out of the visible world entirely.

What we know of it comes from two sources separated by several decades. The antiquarian Thomas Johnson Westropp, writing in 1916 to 1917, described the feature as a small, very-defaced house-ring, a term referring to a circular or ovoid earthwork enclosing a domestic dwelling, the kind of modest rural structure that appears across early medieval Ireland in considerable numbers. His description already implies something close to erasure. By 1923, the Ordnance Survey had recorded it on their six-inch map as an ovoid enclosure measuring approximately twenty metres east to west and ten metres north to south, which would make it a relatively compact example of the type. When Denis Power compiled the site record in 2011, an on-the-ground inspection found no trace whatsoever.

For anyone with a particular interest in landscape archaeology, Carrowclogh is perhaps most useful as a case study in how thoroughly agricultural improvement can absorb a site. The pasture here shows nothing of what lies beneath or, more accurately, what no longer lies beneath. The 1923 OS six-inch map remains the most useful document for locating where the enclosure once stood, though the coordinates place it within unremarkable farmland with no public access infrastructure to speak of. There is nothing to see, which is itself the point: the absence is the record, and the record is what remains.
