Enclosures
In the townland of Castlereagh in County Mayo, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully explained.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland, ranging from prehistoric ringforts, which served as defended farmsteads, to medieval ecclesiastical boundaries and later field systems. The fact that one exists here, carrying its own monument record, tells us that something deliberate was built or dug at this spot, that someone at some point drew a boundary and held it.
