Enclosure, Castletown, Co. Limerick

Some places are most interesting for what is no longer there.

In a pasture on a west-facing slope dropping into a valley near Castletown in County Limerick, there once stood a circular enclosure of the kind that turns up quietly across the Irish countryside, usually as a low earthen ring or a slight thickening in a field boundary. By the time anyone thought to record it formally, it had already gone.

The enclosure was captured on the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, noted as a roughly circular form with a diameter of approximately ten metres. Circular enclosures of this type are generally understood to be early medieval in origin, functioning as enclosed farmsteads or ringforts, though without excavation it is rarely possible to say more. When Denis Power compiled the record for this site, uploaded in August 2011, there was no trace of the monument visible on the ground. The levelling appears to have been thorough. A passageway leading to a nearby house clips the southern line of where the enclosure once sat, suggesting the land around it has been reworked at some point, the old boundary absorbed into more recent use without ceremony.

There is, in practical terms, nothing to see here. The field is in agricultural use, and the enclosure exists now only as a mark on an old map and a line in a heritage database. What makes it worth knowing about is precisely that absence. The 1923 map record means we can say something once stood here, circular and deliberate, about the width of a large suburban garden. The southern edge of that shape now aligns with a path to someone's front door, which is a quietly strange form of continuity. If you are passing through this part of County Limerick and feel inclined to look, the slope and its relationship to the valley below are still legible in the landscape, even if the thing that prompted someone to draw a circle on a map a century ago has long since been smoothed away.
