Enclosure, Clogher, Co. Clare

In a low-lying field in County Clare, a slight rise in the ground holds the remains of an enclosure that refuses to give up its precise purpose.

Nearly square in plan, measuring roughly 29 metres east to west and 28 metres north to south, it sits in drained pasture west of a stream, with forestry plantations pressing in from the south and west. What catches the eye of anyone who knows what to look for is the combination of features: a defining scarp, traces of a bank, large stone blocks along the western side hinting at internal revetment, a gap to the east that may once have served as an entrance, and a shallow external fosse, or ditch, partially visible on the western perimeter. There is also a rectangular annexe extending off the eastern side, and a levelled field boundary or ditch running south from the south-west corner.

The site was recorded as early as the 1916 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, where it appears marked with hachures, the small radiating lines surveyors used to indicate a raised or scarped earthwork. Its closest parallel, in superficial terms at least, is a moated site, a category of later medieval enclosure, typically dating from the thirteenth or fourteenth century, in which a roughly rectangular platform was surrounded by a water-filled or wet ditch, often associated with a manor house or defended farmstead. The possible external fosse here, though shallow at around 0.2 metres deep and 5.5 metres wide, could point in that direction. But the resemblance is cautious, not conclusive; the site has not been excavated, and without dateable finds or structural remains above ground, the enclosure at Clogher keeps its history largely to itself. The surviving bank at the north-east, still reaching an internal height of 0.4 metres, and the earth-and-stone construction elsewhere suggest a site that was once more substantial than what the pasture now quietly swallows.
