Enclosure, Clomantagh, Co. Kilkenny

A circular enclosure roughly forty metres across lies beneath a tillage field in Clomantagh, County Kilkenny, invisible at ground level and detectable only from above.

It exists, for now, as a cropmark, the faint but legible trace that buried or disturbed soil leaves on growing crops when seen from altitude. Where a ditch or bank once defined the boundary of this enclosure, the ground retains a different moisture and nutrient content from the surrounding undisturbed earth, and that difference shows up in the colour and height of the crop overhead. The effect is subtle enough that the site went unrecorded until 2018, when it was identified on Google Maps imagery.

What makes the Clomantagh site particularly interesting is the company it keeps. A ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that proliferated across Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, sits just seventy metres to the northeast. A further enclosure, also visible only as a cropmark, lies a hundred metres to the west-southwest. Three distinct enclosures within such a short radius suggests this stretch of Kilkenny countryside was once considerably busier than its present agricultural plainness implies. Modern field boundaries cut across the circular cropmark, one running roughly east to west just north of its centre, another crossing the southeastern quadrant from north to south, which means later land division has sliced straight through whatever structure once stood here, indifferent to what lay beneath.
