Enclosure, Clonbrock Demesne, Co. Galway

Beneath the hedge-line of a bungalow garden in County Galway, there is an ancient boundary that most people living near it probably do not think about twice.

The garden itself sits inside a subcircular enclosure, roughly forty metres across east to west and thirty-five metres north to south, whose defining earthen bank has been quietly absorbed into the modern landscape over centuries. It is the kind of archaeological feature that survives not through any deliberate act of preservation but through a series of accidents: a hedge planted along one arc, a field wall built along another, and whatever remained simply becoming part of the ground people walk on.

Enclosures of this type, typically a raised bank encircling a roughly circular or oval area, are found throughout Ireland and are generally associated with early medieval settlement, though without excavation it is rarely possible to say more than that with confidence. This particular example sits within the Clonbrock Demesne, a stretch of gently undulating pastureland in north Galway once associated with the Dillon family estate at Clonbrock House. The enclosure's bank is best preserved along its western and north-western arc, where the hedge planted on top of it has inadvertently done the work of protection. Elsewhere the picture is less clear: no trace survives at the north, and along the south-eastern to south-western stretch a field wall was built directly on the line of the bank, either obscuring or displacing whatever earthwork remained beneath.

What survives is fragmentary enough that the enclosure reads less as a monument than as a puzzle distributed across a domestic garden and a few hedge-rows. The bungalow occupying the interior is not incidental to the story; it is part of it, a reminder of how archaeological features in Ireland are often not so much preserved as simply not yet removed.
