Enclosures
In the townland of Cloongaheen, in County Clare, there is an enclosure.
That spare designation, enclosure, covers a broad category in Irish archaeology, referring generally to any defined area bounded by an earthen bank, a ditch, a wall, or some combination of these. Such structures range in age from the Bronze Age to the early medieval period and served purposes that varied from domestic settlement to ritual use to the enclosure of livestock. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is precisely how little is publicly established about it. It has been recorded, given a monument number, and placed on the map, but the detail behind that record remains out of reach for now.
