Enclosure, Coolnatullagh, Co. Clare

There is an enclosure at Coolnatullagh in County Clare that has, in a very practical sense, disappeared.

It cannot be seen from the ground. Dense hazel scrub is slowly filling the valley where it sits on level terrain, and whatever earthwork or boundary once defined this feature has been swallowed so completely by vegetation and time that standing on top of it would tell you nothing at all.

The enclosure does, however, exist on paper, or at least it did. The 1842 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps shows it clearly, marked with hachures, the short radiating lines that cartographers used to suggest the presence of a raised or defined edge. By the time the revised edition was produced in 1915, it had been dropped from the map entirely. Whether this reflects a genuine deterioration of the feature in the intervening decades, or simply a different surveyor making a different judgement call, is impossible to say. Enclosures of this type, circular or subcircular earthen boundaries that once defined farmsteads or enclosed livestock in early medieval Ireland, are common enough across the Irish landscape, though the majority survive only partially and many have been reduced precisely like this one, to invisibility at ground level.

For anyone determined to find the spot, the valley's advancing hazel scrub would be the main obstacle. Hazel regenerates aggressively on ungrazed or lightly grazed limestone ground in Clare, and a valley that was open enough to survey in the nineteenth century can become genuinely dense within a generation or two of reduced land use. The enclosure, if it survives at all beneath the leaf litter and root systems, is likely to remain unreadable without more than casual investigation.
