Enclosure, Coolroe, Co. Kildare

Some archaeological sites announce themselves with tumbled masonry or a grassy mound you can stand on. Others exist only as faint discolourations in a crop, visible for a few weeks each summer when dry conditions stress the soil unevenly above buried ditches, coaxing a ghostly outline up through the grain. The enclosure at Coolroe in County Kildare belongs to this second, quieter category. It has no surface presence at all, and its existence only came to light through satellite imagery.

Reported by Jean-Charles Caillere and identified from Google Earth imagery captured in August 2022, the site appears in level tillage as a large rectangular area, roughly 50 metres on its longer north-northeast to south-southwest axis and about 40 metres wide. What defines it is the cropmark of a narrow fosse, the word fosse here meaning a ditch cut into the subsoil, whose filled-in outline retains just enough difference in moisture and nutrients to show up in growing crops from above. There appears to be an entrance gap at the south-southwest end of the enclosure, suggesting a deliberate break in the ditch where people or animals once passed through. One side, along the west-northwest, is obscured by a later field boundary and drain, which may follow or even partly overlie the older line. The shape and scale are consistent with a type of enclosed settlement or agricultural compound found across Ireland from the prehistoric period through to the early medieval, though without excavation the date and function of this particular site remain unknown.
