Enclosure, Coomnakilla, Co. Kerry

Beneath the canopy of a coniferous forest on a north-west-facing slope in Coomnakilla, there is a circular enclosure that nobody standing on the ground can see.

The site exists, in a meaningful sense, only from the air. It measures roughly twenty metres across, and its outline was captured in a single aerial photograph taken in 1973. Walk to where it ought to be and there is nothing to find, no raised bank, no dip, no visible trace of whatever boundary was once marked out here.

Enclosures of this general kind are common across Ireland, though their purposes varied considerably. Some were ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval families, defined by earthen banks or stone walls. Others served as cattle pounds, ceremonial spaces, or burial enclosures. Without excavation, or at least a clearer surface trace, it is rarely possible to say which type a given example represents. What is known about this particular site is limited: the 1973 photograph, a diameter of approximately twenty metres, and the fact that a second possible enclosure lies around thirty metres to the south-south-east. The two features may be related, or they may simply occupy the same patch of ground by coincidence. The forest that now covers the slope has made any further surface assessment effectively impossible.

The archaeology of south-west Kerry contains many such sites, known only through aerial survey and now obscured by commercial forestry planted over the decades since the mid-twentieth century. The 1973 photograph that recorded this enclosure was taken before the tree cover had fully closed over the area, catching a brief window when the cropmark or soilmark was still legible from above. That window has long since closed.
