Enclosure, Creggane, Co. Cork

A townland boundary cuts straight through the middle of this oval enclosure in Creggane, Co. Cork, a quirk of later administrative geography that bisects something far older.

The boundary line runs roughly west-northwest to east-southeast, splitting the enclosure almost in two, which means a feature of early Irish settlement has been parcelled up and reassigned to different townlands at some point in the centuries since it was built. Today the enclosure is largely levelled, surviving as a slight scarp rather than any dramatic earthwork, with a shallow external fosse, a ditch running around the outside, reaching no more than 0.2 metres in depth on its southern arc.

The enclosure was still clearly visible when the Ordnance Survey completed its six-inch mapping of the area in 1842, recorded then as a hachured oval measuring roughly 60 metres north to south and 50 metres east to west. A lime kiln, a small stone structure used for burning limestone to produce agricultural quicklime, was noted at the outer face of the west-southwest bank, suggesting the site had been put to practical post-medieval use even as the original earthwork slowly disappeared. That kiln survives, heavily overgrown, on the western side. Inside the enclosure, the southern half holds a shallow linear fosse running east to west about 12 metres in from the scarp, curving at its eastern end to run parallel with the enclosure edge. Whether this is a later agricultural feature or something related to the original layout of the site is unclear. A possible souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage often associated with early medieval settlement, has also been identified in the interior, hinting that whoever used this place may have needed somewhere to store goods or find shelter in a hurry.
