Enclosure, Cúil Na Gcopóg, Co. Kerry

What was once a complete circular enclosure in the townland of Lisparkacoosaun on the Dingle Peninsula has been slowly swallowed by the landscape, until almost nothing of it remains above ground.

By the time the second edition of the Ordnance Survey map was produced, only the north-western half of the original ring was still traceable, and even that had been absorbed into an ordinary field boundary. Today, the only hint that anything was ever here is a slight rise in the ground, which may correspond to that surviving north-western arc.

The site, known in Irish as Lios Pháirc an Chuasáin, was originally recorded as a circular univallate enclosure, meaning it was defined by a single bank or wall rather than the multiple concentric rings found at more elaborate sites. These enclosures are common across Ireland and are generally associated with early medieval settlement, often serving as a protected farmstead or ringfort. What makes Lisparkacoosaun more interesting than its near-vanished state might suggest is what appears to have lain beneath it. When the site was being cleared, local accounts reported the discovery of a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber typically built from stone and associated with early medieval sites, used variously for storage, refuge, or both. The writer and folklorist known as An Seabhac independently noted the same feature in 1939. A stone axe-head was also found on top of what was described as a circular underground chamber, almost certainly the same souterrain, and since no other such structure is recorded in the townland, the connection seems reasonable. The axe-head itself was held by University College Cork. J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region, covering the Dingle Peninsula, drew together these details into a single record, though the picture remained incomplete even then.
