Enclosure, Cuilleen, Co. Mayo

Enclosures
At Cuilleen in County Mayo, there is a recorded archaeological enclosure, a monument type that appears across Ireland in many forms, from the circular earthen banks of a ringfort used as a defended farmstead in the early medieval period, to the stone-walled enclosures that marked out ecclesiastical or agricultural ground in earlier centuries.
The designation tells us that something was deliberately bounded here, that someone once drew a line between inside and outside and made it permanent in earth or stone. Beyond that, the surviving record for this particular site is silent for now.
