Enclosures
In the townland of Doonty in County Mayo, an ancient enclosure sits in the landscape, formally recorded but largely undescribed.
Enclosures of this kind, circular or sub-circular boundaries defined by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland. They could have served as farmsteads, animal enclosures, or settlement boundaries across a broad sweep of prehistoric and early medieval time. What makes Doonty's example quietly compelling is precisely its anonymity: it has a place in the archaeological record, but the details that would give it a story remain, for now, out of public reach.
