Enclosures
In the townland of Drumgarve in County Mayo, an ancient enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully described.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and most quietly puzzling features of the Irish countryside. They range from the remains of early medieval ringforts, which were essentially enclosed farmsteads defined by an earthen bank and ditch, to later field boundaries and ecclesiastical enclosures, and distinguishing one type from another often requires close fieldwork or excavation. That Drumgarve has one on record is notable; what exactly it is, and what story it carries, remains a question the available documentation does not yet answer.
