Enclosure, Dunmore Demesne, Co. Galway

In a quiet corner of County Galway, a low oval ring sits in farmland that was once the manicured grounds of a Georgian mansion, largely ignored and slowly returning to the earth.

It is the kind of feature that rewards a second glance, an earthen bank barely reaching a metre in height, enclosing an interior that rises gently toward its centre, with a shallow external fosse, a defensive or boundary ditch, running around the outside at a width of just one metre.

The enclosure measures roughly 37 metres north to south and 25.5 metres east to west, an oval shape that is characteristic of early Irish enclosed settlements, though its precise date and original function remain unrecorded. What is known is its setting: this ground once formed part of the demesne of Dunmore House, a late eighteenth-century mansion that still stands approximately 170 metres to the north-northeast. A demesne, in the Irish landed estate tradition, was the private parkland and farmland kept in hand by the estate owner rather than let to tenants. The mansion itself is noted by the architectural historian Mark Bence-Jones in his 1978 survey of Irish country houses. The enclosure would have predated the house by a considerable margin, its origins belonging to a much older layer of the landscape that the Georgian estate was later laid across.

The earthworks are poorly preserved, and little of the original bank survives above ground to any significant height. What remains gives just enough shape to trace the outline of the feature, a faint but legible signature in the grass of whatever settlement, enclosure, or ritual space once occupied this gentle rise in the farmland.
