Enclosure, Errew, Co. Mayo

On the north-western edge of the Errew peninsula, where the land tilts gently eastward before dropping sharply to the stony shore of Lough Conn, there is a small circular enclosure that nobody has yet managed to explain.

It measures roughly eight to eight and a half metres across, defined by a grass-covered bank of earth and large stones, slumped and eroded over time, with field clearance boulders pushed up against it at various points. The interior is level and scattered with stones, and a ring of hawthorn and hazel trees follows the perimeter. Nephin Mountain sits on the south-western horizon. The enclosure is tidy enough in its proportions to be clearly deliberate, but its purpose remains genuinely unknown.

What makes this structure quietly puzzling is partly its absence from the historical record. It does not appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838, which was a remarkably thorough survey of the Irish landscape, recording field boundaries, ruins, and even minor earthworks across the country. The enclosure only surfaces on the 1922 edition of the same map, marked as a small hachured circle, the conventional symbol for an earthwork of some kind. Whether it was simply missed by the earlier surveyors, or whether it genuinely postdates 1838, is not clear. Enclosures of this general type in Ireland range from early medieval ringforts, which were typically domestic farmsteads enclosed for security, to livestock pens, burial plots, or structures associated with patterns and local devotion. None of those categories has been confirmed here. The bank has a narrow shelf of earth and stone running along the outside of its northern arc, which may be simple tumble from the wall itself, or may indicate something more deliberate about the original design.
