Enclosure, Garrannaguilly, Co. Kilkenny

At ground level, there is almost nothing to see.

A slight rise in the soil, a field boundary cutting across a patch of tillage on a south-west-facing slope in County Kilkenny, and that is more or less it. The enclosure at Garrannaguilly revealed itself not to a walking archaeologist but to a camera mounted in a passing aircraft, its circular outline emerging as a cropmark, the kind of ghostly impression left in growing crops when buried ditches or banks alter how moisture and nutrients reach the roots above them. Cropmarks are often the only surviving trace of monuments that were never built in stone, and in this case the aerial photograph disclosed not just one site but something considerably more complex.

The enclosure is roughly circular, around 70 metres in diameter, and defined by a fosse, which is a cut ditch rather than a raised earthwork. Enclosures of this type are scattered across the Irish landscape and date broadly to the early medieval period, though without excavation it is difficult to assign a precise date to any individual example. What distinguishes Garrannaguilly is the additional detail captured in that single aerial image, reference CUCAP BOD 12. Alongside the main ring, the photograph shows a large rectangular annexe attached to its north-western arc, a feature that suggests a more elaborate arrangement of space than a simple enclosed settlement would require. About 120 metres to the north-north-east, a second, smaller circular enclosure appears as its own cropmark, raising the possibility that this was once a small cluster of related sites rather than an isolated monument. A modern field boundary running north-east to south-west cuts through the southern portion of the main enclosure, and the area beyond that boundary shows no trace of the monument at all, either obscured or gone entirely.
