Enclosures
On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a rough stone enclosure sits quietly in the landscape at Glanlough, measuring roughly 10.4 metres by 8.5 metres.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood features of the Irish countryside; they could represent the remains of an early medieval farmstead, a livestock pen, or something more ceremonial, and without excavation it is rarely possible to say which. What distinguishes this one is its position, located towards the southern end of whatever larger feature or parcel of land it belongs to, suggesting it played a specific, bounded role rather than simply marking a perimeter.
