Enclosure, Gualainn, Co. Kerry

On the lower southern slopes of Croaghskearda on the Dingle Peninsula, a site known as Fohernanalbanagh Fort, or Fothrach na nAlbanach in Irish, has all but vanished into the hillside.

What was once a roughly circular, univallate enclosure, meaning a settlement defined by a single enclosing bank or wall, is now detectable mainly as a level patch of ground interrupting an otherwise sloping field. That relative flatness is essentially all that remains of what was, at least by the time of the first edition Ordnance Survey map, a still-legible archaeological site.

The Ordnance Survey maps recorded not just the enclosing boundary but three rectangular buildings arranged in a parallel east-west row along the northern interior of the site, apparently built up against the inner face of the enclosing bank. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs, compiled in the nineteenth century, described these structures as ruins already nearly level to the ground, each measuring approximately 50 links, a surveying unit equivalent to roughly ten metres. The name Fothrach na nAlbanach is itself suggestive, fothrach being an Irish word for a ruined or overgrown settlement, and na nAlbanach meaning of the Scots or Albanians, a term historically used in Irish to refer to people from Scotland. Whether that name reflects an actual historical association or is a piece of local legend-making attached to an already ancient ruin is now difficult to say. The site was catalogued in J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region, the Dingle Peninsula, which remains one of the principal references for the area's early remains.

The site today offers little in the way of visible structure. The levelled area on the slope is the main indicator of where the enclosure once stood, and a visitor with an eye for subtle changes in gradient might pick it out, though there is nothing upstanding to frame or confirm the impression.
