Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood features of the Irish countryside. The term covers a broad range of structures, from the circular ringforts of the early medieval period, used as defended farmsteads, to earlier prehistoric boundaries whose purposes remain debated. That this one carries so little attached detail makes it, in a quiet way, representative of how much of rural Ireland's archaeological fabric remains only partially known.
