Enclosure, Keeloges, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Keeloges in County Mayo, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recognised as a monument but largely undescribed in any publicly available record.

Enclosures of this kind, circular or sub-circular boundaries defined by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, appear across Ireland in considerable numbers and can date from the prehistoric period through to the early medieval, serving purposes that range from settlement and farming to ritual use. Without excavation or detailed survey, it is rarely possible to say with certainty which category any one example belongs to, and Keeloges offers no easy answer.
