Enclosure, Keeloges New, Co. Mayo
Co. Mayo |
Enclosures
In the townland of Keeloges New, in County Mayo, there is a feature recorded on the archaeological map simply as an enclosure.
The designation is one of the most common in Irish field archaeology, covering everything from prehistoric ringforts to early medieval farmsteads, yet each one represents a deliberate act of boundary-making, a decision by someone, at some point, to define an interior space against the world outside. What survives at Keeloges New, and what purpose it once served, remains largely undocumented in the public record.
