Enclosures
In the townland of Kilbane, in County Kerry, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but largely unexamined in any publicly available form.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet most quietly puzzling features of the Irish countryside. The term covers a broad range of structures, from early medieval ringforts, which were earthen or stone-walled farmsteads typically dating from around the sixth to the twelfth century, to later pastoral enclosures whose origins are harder to pin down. Without more detailed records, Kilbane's example belongs to that large and genuinely interesting category of places that are known to exist, formally acknowledged, yet still awaiting closer attention.
