Enclosure, Killiane Little, Co. Wexford

Nothing marks it on the ground.

No earthwork, no visible bank, no signpost. Yet in aerial photographs, a near-perfect circle roughly 90 metres across emerges from the soil of Killiane Little in County Wexford, its outline preserved only in the differential growth of crops above a buried ditch. This is a cropmark enclosure, a class of site that becomes legible only from altitude and only under the right conditions, when a dry summer stresses the vegetation enough to reveal what lies beneath. The ditch, or fosse, that originally defined this enclosure was about five metres wide, and whatever stood inside it has long since vanished into the ploughed-out flatness of the surrounding fields.

The site sits on a slight rise in an otherwise low-lying landscape, a location that would have offered modest but meaningful elevation above the surrounding ground. More striking is its relationship to the coast: it lies approximately 600 metres west of what was once the original shoreline of south Wexford harbour. That harbour has shifted considerably over the centuries through a combination of silting, land reclamation, and natural change, which means this enclosure, now set well back from any water, may once have had a much more direct relationship with the sea. Circular enclosures of this scale in Ireland range widely in date and function, from prehistoric ritual or settlement sites to early medieval farmsteads enclosed by a surrounding ditch, broadly similar in form to a rath or ringfort, though the term enclosure is used when the precise character of the feature remains uncertain.
