Enclosure, Kilmanahan, Co. Waterford

There is nothing visible at Kilmanahan to the naked eye, no earthwork ridge, no standing stone, no field boundary that seems out of place. And yet, when satellite imagery captured the area in 2021, a nearly perfect circle appeared in the cropmarks, roughly 45 metres across, its outline betrayed only by the differential growth of whatever was planted above it. Cropmarks form when buried features, a ditch, a wall foundation, a filled pit, affect the soil's ability to retain moisture, causing the vegetation above to grow taller or shorter, greener or more parched, than the surrounding crop. From ground level, nothing; from above, a ghost.

The enclosure was identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère, who spotted it in 2021 Maxar Technologies satellite imagery. It is defined by a fosse, a ditch dug to demarcate and defend a circular area, a form of enclosure with deep roots in Irish prehistory and the early medieval period, though without excavation it is not possible to assign a precise date or function to this particular example. What makes the find slightly more intriguing is that it does not stand alone. A second, slightly larger enclosure lies approximately 120 metres to the south-west, also visible only as a cropmark. Paired or clustered enclosures of this kind are known elsewhere in Ireland and can suggest a settlement complex, a ritual landscape, or simply successive phases of activity in the same area, though again, the ground beneath Kilmanahan has not yet been opened to offer any clearer answer.
