Enclosures
In the townland of Kilmogue in County Kilkenny, an ancient enclosure sits in the landscape as a quiet irregularity, the kind of feature that rewards those who pay attention to the shape of the ground beneath them.
Enclosures of this type are among the most common yet least understood monuments in the Irish countryside. They range from the remains of early medieval ringforts, which served as farmsteads enclosed by an earthen bank and ditch, to prehistoric ceremonial sites or later pastoral boundaries, and without closer investigation it is rarely possible to say with certainty which category any single example belongs to. That ambiguity is itself part of what makes them worth noticing.
