On a west-facing slope in Kilnanare, County Kerry, a possible circular enclosure sits in unremarkable pasture above a river valley, entirely invisible to anyone walking across it. Stand on the ground and there is almost nothing to find: a slight rise of around five centimetres, and two earthfast stones whose upper surfaces barely break the turf. The archaeology here belongs not to the eye level of a visitor but to a different vantage point altogether.

What gives the site away is a 1977 aerial photograph, in which the buried remains show up as a shadow site, a term for features that become legible from above when low sunlight or differential crop and soil growth reveals outlines otherwise hidden beneath the surface. In that photograph, an arc of a probable bank running roughly from east-northeast to west is discernible, tracing what may once have been a circular enclosure approximately twenty-five metres in diameter. Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological forms in Ireland, often associated with early medieval settlement, though without excavation the precise date and function of this one cannot be established. The two stones visible at ground level may be remnants of whatever structure once defined that boundary.
