Enclosure, Knockalafalla, Co. Waterford

On a broad hill at Knockalafalla in County Waterford, a slight rise in the grass is almost all that remains of what was once a clearly defined circular enclosure. The ground lifts just enough to notice, bounded by a low scarp, a term for an artificial slope or earthen edge, that drops between 0.4 and 0.8 metres around its circuit. Easy to walk past without a second glance, it is the kind of site that rewards the person who already knows to look.

The enclosure was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840, where it appeared as a circle roughly 48 metres in diameter. On the ground today it measures approximately 39 metres north to south and 37 metres east to west, suggesting either some erosion over the intervening period or a difference between the mapped outline and the surviving earthwork. A stone field wall follows the perimeter along the south-western to western arc, a later agricultural boundary that has effectively borrowed the ancient edge as a convenient line. The entrance, if that is the right word for it, survives at the east-north-east as a slight dip in the scarp, a gap just distinguishable enough from the rest of the circuit to have been intentional. Circular enclosures of this kind are a recurring feature of the Irish countryside, associated variously with early medieval settlement, stock management, or ceremonial use, though the evidence at any individual site is rarely specific enough to be certain.
