Enclosure, Knockanruddig, Co. Kerry

On a rough, east-facing hillside near Kilgarvan in County Kerry, a small rectangular platform sits quietly in the pasture, its interior raised noticeably above the surrounding ground.

It measures roughly 20 metres east to west and 12 metres north to south, and whoever built it took care to level things out: the interior floor has been raised between half a metre and 0.7 metres above the exterior ground level, effectively counteracting the natural downslope gradient. That engineering effort, modest as it appears today, is what makes the feature worth pausing over.

The enclosure came to light during pre-development survey work carried out by John Cronin and Associates ahead of a wind farm project in the Knockanruddig area. Its western boundary is formed by a low drystone wall, a construction method in which stones are laid without mortar, relying on careful placement and weight for stability. The wall here is mostly a single course, built from medium to large stones with occasional boulders, and nowhere rises above half a metre in height. Moving eastward and downslope, the boundary shifts character, becoming a raised bank of earth and stone rather than a freestanding wall. A disused trackway runs upslope to the northwest, just to the east of the feature, hinting at a broader pattern of past activity in the area. The enclosure is considered most likely a post-medieval agricultural feature, comparable in form to several other sites recorded in the surrounding landscape, though its precise function, whether for tillage, livestock management, or some other practical purpose, remains unconfirmed. What is clear is that someone, at some point after the medieval period, put considerable effort into shaping this corner of a Kerry hillside into something level and contained.
