Enclosure, Knockbaron, Co. Galway

In a patch of Galway pastureland, satellite imagery reveals something that ground-level observers might walk past without a second thought: two small circular features, each roughly ten metres across, sitting quietly in the grass about fifty-four metres apart.

They are easy to miss on foot, but from above their outlines are clear enough to have caught the attention of Jean-Charles Caillère, who identified and reported them.

The two enclosures are tentatively classified as ring-ditches, a term covering a broad range of circular earthworks that can represent the eroded remains of prehistoric burial mounds, the outer boundaries of long-vanished structures, or other features whose original purpose has been obscured by centuries of agricultural activity. At roughly ten metres in diameter, these are small examples. The southern enclosure, the one described here, has been further altered by a levelled field boundary running roughly east-northeast to west-southwest, cutting across its southern half. That kind of disturbance is common across Irish farmland, where generations of drainage works, ploughing, and boundary adjustments have left earlier features either damaged or entirely erased. The fact that both enclosures survive at all, even as faint marks readable only from above, suggests they were never deeply cut features to begin with, or that the land use here has been relatively gentle over time.

Because the enclosures are visible primarily through aerial and satellite observation rather than as upstanding earthworks, a visitor standing in the field would be unlikely to make out much. The surrounding pasture gives no obvious sense of their presence. Their interest lies less in what can be experienced on the ground than in what the overhead view quietly discloses about a landscape that carries far older geometries beneath its ordinary surface.
