Enclosures
In the townland of Lahardaun, in the quieter reaches of County Mayo, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully explained.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and least understood monument types in Ireland, ranging from early medieval farmsteads ringed by an earthen bank and ditch, known as raths or ringforts, to later field boundaries and ecclesiastical enclosures. Without more specific detail about this particular example, its precise form and date remain open questions, which is itself a quietly telling fact about how much of rural Mayo's archaeology still awaits closer attention.
