Enclosure (Large), Castlereagh, Co. Waterford

At the foot of a southeast-to-northwest valley in County Waterford, a large oval of raised grassland sits quietly in the landscape, its true scale easy to miss until you begin to trace its edges. The enclosure stretches roughly 115 metres along its longer axis and 86 metres across, making it a substantial earthwork by any measure, yet it sits low and undemonstrative, more felt than seen.

What defines the site is an earthen bank, about three metres wide, that runs around the perimeter of the oval. An earthen enclosure of this kind is a broad category in Irish archaeology, the term covering everything from early medieval farming settlements to enclosures of ritual or defensive purpose, and the exact function of this one remains unresolved. The bank retains traces of external stone-facing along much of its circuit, though along the northern to southeastern arc, where a road now runs, that original fabric has been absorbed into an ordinary stone field wall. The bank itself varies noticeably in height depending on which side you measure: the interior height rises from roughly 0.4 metres at the northwest, which sits on the lower slope, to around a metre at the southeast, while the exterior face reaches up to 1.5 metres on the southwest side. That variation is partly a product of the sloping ground rather than original construction intent, though the overall effect is of a boundary that once carried some weight, whether practical or symbolic. To the south-southeast and south, there is slight evidence of a fosse, a ditch running around the outside of the bank, though it is shallow now, about 0.3 metres deep at its base and five metres wide. A possible entrance, stone-lined and roughly 2.4 metres across, appears on the southeast side, which would have faced toward the valley and the stream that runs some 60 metres to the southwest.
