Enclosure, Lecarrow, Co. Mayo

At Lecarrow in County Mayo, half an ancient enclosure survives in the ground while the other half has simply ceased to exist.

That kind of split survival, one portion legible, the other gone, gives the site an oddly instructive quality: it shows, quite literally, how prehistoric features vanish from the landscape one generation of activity at a time.

The enclosure was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838 as a circular earthwork roughly 25 metres in diameter. Circular enclosures of this type are fairly common across Ireland; they served various purposes depending on their period and context, from enclosed farmsteads to ceremonial or burial sites. By the later OS editions it had already disappeared from the cartographic record, and a 1994 survey by Lavelle noted it as levelled. When an inspection was carried out in 2007 ahead of a nearby development, the picture turned out to be more complicated. The western half of the enclosure was still traceable as a raised, semi-circular platform, measuring roughly 25 metres north to south and 13 metres east to west, edged by a low scarp between 0.2 and 0.4 metres high. A concrete wall ran along the straight eastern side, effectively marking the boundary between what had survived and what had not. East of that wall, the ground had been entirely cleared, and a twentieth-century bungalow occupied the space where the other half of the enclosure once lay. By the time the inspection notes were published, the bungalow had since been removed, leaving the eastern half simply absent rather than built over.
