Enclosure, Lohercannan, Co. Kerry

There is nothing to see at Lohercannan.

Walk the ground, scan the fields, and the land gives nothing away, no earthwork, no ridge, no shadow in the soil that a casual eye might catch. And yet, from the air, something older quietly announces itself: a D-shaped enclosure, its outline preserved only as a crop mark, visible in infra-red aerial photography taken as part of the National Coastline Survey. Crop marks appear where buried features alter how plants grow above them, often revealing the ditches or banks of ancient enclosures long after the original structure has vanished from the surface. Here, that faint botanical signature is all that remains.

The enclosure sits on gently rising ground with a commanding position over the estuary of the River Lee to the south, Tralee Bay to the west, and Annagh Island to the south-west. It measures roughly 26 metres north to south and 45 metres east to west, with the straight side of the D oriented to the north. That deliberate positioning above water and wetland is a pattern familiar from prehistoric settlement in the region. Michael Connolly, in his 2008 doctoral thesis at University College Cork, 'The Prehistoric Settlement of the Lee Valley, Tralee, Co. Kerry: A Landscape Perspective', identified this site as part of a broader pattern of prehistoric activity across the valley, where enclosures were placed with clear attention to the surrounding estuary landscape rather than by accident or convenience.

Because the site leaves no visible trace at ground level, there is little a visitor could meaningfully observe in person. Its real existence is photographic and scholarly, a place known primarily through the overhead view rather than anything underfoot.
