Enclosure, Mullamast, Co. Kildare

At Mullamast in County Kildare, something sits in the landscape that even the official record cannot quite make up its mind about. It appears on one heritage inventory as a potential site rather than a confirmed one, its existence inferred not from excavation or field survey but from the stubborn persistence of cartographic traces across nearly seven decades of mapping.

The Ordnance Survey's first edition six-inch map of 1841 shows the feature as an unenclosed ring of trees, the kind of circular planting that can sometimes mark the ghost of an earlier earthwork or enclosure. By the time the latest edition was produced in 1909, the depiction had shifted: the same spot is shown as an enclosure, though part of it is shaded in a way that suggests the surveyors themselves were uncertain whether they were looking at a built feature or simply a pond. That ambiguity is itself revealing. The two maps agree that something is there, but disagree on what it is, and the question has never been formally resolved. An enclosure, in the archaeological sense, typically refers to a defined area bounded by a bank, ditch, or wall, and can range in date and function from prehistoric ceremonial sites to medieval farmsteads. Whether the ring at Mullamast was ever any of these things, or whether it was always just a landscaping feature or a low-lying hollow prone to flooding, remains genuinely open.
