Enclosure, Nooaff, Co. Clare

In a pasture field on a gentle south-facing slope in Nooaff, something old is hiding just below the surface of the grass.

It does not appear on any Ordnance Survey map, and there is nothing obvious at ground level to draw the eye, yet satellite imagery captured around 2010 reveals the unmistakable outline of an oval enclosure roughly 50 metres across from north to south and 45 metres from east to west. What shows up is a cropmark, the kind of faint discolouration in vegetation that appears when buried or compacted ground beneath affects how grass and crops grow above it. These ghost outlines are often the only surviving trace of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead that was once the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular or oval earthen bank surrounding a homestead and its outbuildings.

The site came to light when David Galvin reported it to the National Monuments Service. Along the north-eastern edge of the enclosure, a field bank abuts the outer circuit and continues north-east into the neighbouring field, where a second curved bank is also visible. These associated field boundaries retain some traces at ground level, making them at least partly legible to someone walking the land, even if the enclosure itself gives little away without the aerial perspective. The whole arrangement suggests a landscape that was once organised around this central enclosed space, with boundaries extending outward from it in a pattern that has partially survived centuries of agricultural use.
