Enclosures
In the townland of Oldcourt in County Kilkenny, there is a recorded archaeological enclosure that sits quietly in the landscape, noted on the official monuments record but otherwise largely undocumented in the public domain.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood features of the Irish countryside. They can represent the remains of a ringfort, a type of circular earthwork that served as a farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly between 500 and 1200 AD, or they may belong to an entirely different tradition, prehistoric or ecclesiastical, depending on their form and context. Without excavation or detailed survey data, the precise character of this particular example remains open.
