Enclosure, Oldgrange, Co. Kildare

In a field at Oldgrange in County Kildare, something invisible to anyone walking the ground becomes suddenly legible from the air. A roughly circular enclosure, complete with an entrance gap on its south-eastern side, an annexe extending to the north, and a radiating field system spreading outward from it, appears as a cropmark when seen from above. No earthwork survives at ground level; what remains is written only in the differential growth of crops or grass over buried features, the soil above filled ditches retaining more moisture, producing a slightly lusher, darker stripe that the camera catches where the eye cannot.

Cropmarks of this kind are one of the quieter ways that the Irish landscape holds onto its past. Circular enclosures, broadly speaking, were among the most common settlement forms across early medieval Ireland, used as enclosed farmsteads or raths, their surrounding ditches demarcating household space and providing some measure of security for livestock. The presence here of a possible annexe and an associated field system suggests a site with more going on than a simple enclosure, perhaps a working agricultural complex with defined plots extending outward from a central habitation area. The Oldgrange cropmark was identified in a Google Earth aerial photograph taken on the 28th of June 2018, a summer date that matters, since cropmarks tend to appear most clearly during dry spells when water-stressed vegetation above shallower or more disturbed soils begins to differ visibly from that growing over deeper, undisturbed ground.
