What makes it quietly peculiar is the way the surrounding field boundary seems almost to acknowledge it, running in an irregular path around the outside of the monument's south-western to north-eastern arc, as though later farmers understood they were working around something they should not disturb. That deference, if that is what it is, may even hint that the field boundary incorporated an earlier outer enclosing element, making the modern field edge and the ancient monument part of a single, layered conversation in the soil.

The site appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839 as a circular enclosure, that early cartographic record offering the clearest picture of what was once visible on the ground. By the time of the 1900 revision, the mapmakers described it differently, as a penannular waterlogged fosse. A fosse is essentially a ditch or moat-like channel, and penannular simply means almost circular, a ring broken by a gap, in this case absent in the north-eastern sector. The waterlogged condition noted at the turn of the twentieth century suggests the ditch was still holding moisture, which can itself be a preserving force, sealing organic material beneath anaerobic conditions. By 2020, satellite imagery showed the interior under grass and the perimeter thickly overgrown with trees, a state that conceals the monument from casual view but also offers it a degree of incidental protection.
