Enclosure, Rafwee, Co. Galway

On a low ridge in the grasslands of Rafwee in north County Galway, an oval outline in the earth marks out a space that has never quite been explained.

Roughly 27 metres along its longer axis, running north-north-east to south-south-west, the enclosure is defined on its eastern arc by a surviving stone wall, while the rest of its circuit has collapsed into a degraded scarp, a gentle earthen slope where a boundary once stood more firmly. The combination of built stone and eroded earthwork is not unusual in the Irish landscape, but it gives the site an unfinished quality, as though the place is slowly receding back into the field.
