It belongs to a category of site that only reveals itself under the right conditions: a cropmark, where variations in soil depth and moisture cause crops growing over buried features to ripen or stress at different rates, leaving a pattern that an aerial camera can catch but a spade might miss entirely.

The enclosure was identified from an aerial photograph, reference GB89.T.27, which shows a roughly circular cropmark approximately 30 to 35 metres in diameter with an entrance facing north-north-east. The same outline is faintly detectable on more recent Ordnance Survey ortho-imagery. Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common prehistoric and early medieval monument types in Ireland, though assigning a precise period or function without excavation is difficult. What gives this particular site a little extra context is its proximity to a ring-ditch recorded approximately 100 metres to the south-east. A ring-ditch is typically the ploughed-down remains of a burial mound, the circular trench that once surrounded an earthen cairn or barrow. Two such features sitting within easy sight of one another suggests this corner of Kilkenny may once have been a more significant landscape than the current tillage fields imply.
